Mauispirifer hectori
Phylum: Brachiopod
Genus: Mauispirifer Species: Mauispirifer hectori Location found: Reefton |
Mauispirifer hectori is a common fossil from the Reefton Devonian. Previous names have included Acrospirifer hectori. A distinguishing feature is its wide, winged shape, typical of many Spirifers, with a width-to-length ratio of ca. 2-3 : 1. Other characteristics are its strong ribbing and its prominent umbo. Although superficially similar to Euryspirifer coxi, it can be distinguished by its smaller beak, more rounded outline, and strongly convex profile (especially in the ventral shell). Good descriptions and images are provided by Earp (2016), based on specimens in Canterbury Museum.
