Gastropod
Class: Gastropoda
Genus: Palaeozygopleura?? Species: Not known Location found: Reefton |
Very few gastropods have been found in the Devonian deposits either at Reefton or in the Baton River, and the few that have been found have only been tentatively identified. Willis (1965), for example, found several species of gastropods in the Baton River, which he assigned to Omphalotrochus sp. and Palaeozygopleura spp. The mould seen in the two halves of the rock above, from the Baton River, is therefore significant. It seems to represent a small Turretellid-like gastropod, comprising ca. 8 whorls in a rapidly narrowing, dextral (i.e. right-handed) spiral. As such, it may be a member of the Palaeozygopleura. However, identification at this stage is very uncertain.
