Acrospirifer arduennensis (and perhaps Hysterolithes cf. subspeciosus) from the Baton River
|
Spiriferida
Phylum: Brachiopoda
Order: Spiriferida Genus: Acrospirifer? Species: Acrospirifer arduennensis? Location found: Baton River |
This collection of fossils was found in the Baton River. It comprises fossils belonging to the order of brachiopods known as the Spiriferida, characterised by their long, straight hingeline, strong ribbing, marked sulcus and prominent beak.
More detailed classification is uncertain because of the rarity of specimens, and the large number of Spirifids that have been reported from the Devonian. For the more coarsely ribbed specimens shown above and to the right, I favour the species Acrospirifer ardennuensis. For the more finely ribbed specimen in the image above, however, there are similarities with Hysterolithes cf. subspeciosus, illustrated by Shirley - so perhaps both are present here. |
