Now and then, one finds fossils that defeat us. Sometimes it's obviously a fossil, but it's difficult to tell what type. Occasionally it's so elusive that it's not even clear if it's a fossil or not: maybe it's just a product of depositional processes, or even a trick of the light.
This one is most definitely a fossil, and probably to an expert in whatever sort of fossil it is, its identity would be obvious. The most likely suggestion seems to be that it's a Porifera - a form of sponge.
