Dichograptus sp.
Order: Graptolite
Genus: Dichograptus Species: Not known Location found: Aorangi Mine, Nelson Region |
Dichograptus is a distinctive genus of graptolites, characterised by its rather delicate form, with four fine arms on either side of the main branch. Several different species exist, globally, which can be distinguished by detailed examination of the shape of the 'teeth' on the arms. The species found here is possibly Dichograptus octibrachiatus. Like other graptolites from the Aorangi Mine area, this is found in a wide range of localities across the world, including the Trondheim area of Sweden, Nevada/Ohio and Estonia. In all these localities it occurs in association with other species found in the Aorangi Mines deposits, including Tetragraptus quadribrachiatus and Isograptus victoriae (see image, right).
